Possible Causes for When Your Air Filter Gets Wet

Possible Causes for When Your Air Filter Gets WetAs you perform the normal monthly maintenance on your HVAC system, you shouldn’t be surprised by the accumulation of leaves you have to sweep from around the unit outdoors, nor the dust caught in the air filter. You may be very alarmed, however, if you discover a wet filter. While this is definitely an issue, there’s no need to panic. Here are a few of the possible causes and, more importantly, what to do about them.

Drainage Problems

A collector pan and drainage lines collect the condensation created when an air conditioner cools the air. Generally, the moisture collects in a pan designed for that purpose and travels through drain lines that carry it away from the unit and onto the ground. Unfortunately, the pan and the lines can collect rust and dirt, eventually becoming clogged. When the system backs up, the water must go somewhere, meaning it can leak onto the air filter or even the HVAC unit itself. This can cause mold, mildew and other kinds of damage.

Installation Problems

When the HVAC system is installed properly, water from condensation drains away from the unit. If not, water can seep into the roof, the walls and floors. A wet filter may be an indicator that condensation is collecting where it shouldn’t. This is one reason you should always work with a licensed contractor when installing an HVAC system.

Leaking Coolant

Coolant leaks won’t stop cold air production immediately. In fact, the air cools so much that the coils may freeze, interrupting airflow. Moisture may collect on the air filter, which could eventually cause the unit to break down. If the condenser coils freeze, turn off the air conditioner immediately to prevent additional damage.

Regular maintenance will expose issues before the damage is too severe. If you find a wet filter, contact the professionals at Arpi’s Industries for assistance. We’re happy to serve homeowners throughout Calgary.
