HVAC contractors specialize in the installation and maintenance of furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and boilers. They are certified professionals who have the in-depth knowledge and skills to install, repair and clean various heating and cooling systems, whether large or small.
They also offer other HVAC services and products. Some HVAC contractors specialize in air duct cleaning and sealing, air balancing and even comfort audits. Choosing a good heating contractor is important because your heating system is an expensive investment, and you want to make sure that it lasts for many years.
In order to choose a good heating contractor, we recommend that you do your homework. If you know of someone who has experience working with an HVAC contractor, ask for recommendations. Ask family, friends, neighbors or co-workers if they have any referrals. If you don’t have luck there, you can always ask the contractor for references, which you should contact to learn about their experiences with the contractor.
Check how long the contractor has been in business and contact the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company is in good standing. We also advise you to make sure that the contractor is properly licensed.
Once you have narrowed down your choice of contractor, it is a good idea to call them and ask pertinent questions, such as the number of jobs they have performed, how long they have been in business, what type of liability insurance they have and whether they perform the work themselves or subcontract it out. Finally, request that your HVAC contractor provide you with a written pricing estimate that includes the quote, material cost and labor cost.
Choosing a reputable contractor is especially important considering the fact that the energy efficiency of your HVAC equipment depends upon a quality installation. Even though you may have top of the line equipment, if the installation is not done properly, you will not realize the energy savings you expected.
