Did you forget to schedule your fall furnace inspection? It’s not too late. Don’t neglect one of the most important steps toward ensuring the efficiency and longevity of your heating system. There are still a few months of furnace weather ahead of us.Scheduling a furnace tune-up now will yield energy savings, reduced utility bills and will decrease your risks of unexpected breakdowns or repairs. Plus, routine furnace maintenance will provide improved whole-house comfort and indoor air quality.
While there are a few steps you can take to maintain furnace efficiency, like changing the filters and cleaning dirt and debris from vents and grilles, other steps are best left to a licensed HVAC technician. In fact, your warranty may depend on it.
Some of the more technical aspects of an annual furnace inspection and tune-up include things like:
- Verifying the accuracy of your thermostat and calibrating it if necessary
- Inspecting all movable parts for wear and tear and lubricating them to reduce friction
- Evaluating electrical wires and connections, looking for frayed or worn wires, or evidence of sparking.
- Checking to ensure burners are clean, working properly and the flame is burning steadily
- Inspecting internal and external venting systems to make sure the seals are tight and they are free of leaks
- Verifying the flue is in good shape and working properly
- Looking for any cracks, rust or signs of corrosion on the heat exchanger, as well as the main furnace body
Making small repairs and adjustment now protects your system from undesirable malfunctions and breakdowns later, and will also mitigate repair costs. Once your furnace inspection and tune-up is complete, your furnace will benefit in terms of:
Energy efficiency. The more efficient your HVAC system is, the lower your utility bills will be.
Improved air quality. Clean vents and filters, and a leak-free heating system mean improved indoor air quality and humidity levels.
Warranty protection. Most HVAC manufacturers require their equipment to be maintained by a licensed HVAC technician or the warranty is voided.
