Canada Promotes Energy Star: How Calgary Homeowners Can Benefit

Canada Promotes Energy Star: How Calgary Homeowners Can BenefitTo help Canadians identify energy – efficient homes, the Energy Star for New Homes(ESNH) Standard is now available to new home buyers across Canada.Previously available only in Ontario and Saskatchewan, the ESNH Standard became national as of December 1, 2012.Developed in cooperation with home building professionals, key industry stakeholders and Natural Resources Canada, the program promotes efficiency, saves Canadians money and helps the environment when new home buyers select one of the homes designated as compliant with the program & #8217;s efficiency standards.

Benefits of the new ESNH Standard:

  • Makes homes more energy efficient.
ESNH Standard homes are 20 percent more efficient than those built to code.A large contribution to this increase in efficiency is an Energy Star HVAC system.Up to half of the energy consumed in your home can be attributed to heating and cooling, so installing one of these HVAC systems can have a big impact on your annual heating and cooling expenses. These can be reduced even further thanks to the new ESNH standards of adding heat recovery ventilators to improve your home’s indoor air quality.
  • Improves insulation requirements.
The new standards include minimal requirements for insulation for walls and ceilings beyond building code requirements. This helps control your energy costs by keeping heated or cooled air from your HVAC system in your home where it belongs.
  • Helps reduce energy consumption and costs.
Energy Star homes save a minimum of 400 kilowatt-hours per year in electrical costs using qualified appliances and lighting. This is on top of savings from heating and hot water.
  • Provides a variety of options.
There are many options for builders and homeowners when it comes to selecting qualified products beyond appliances. Windows, insulation, ventilation, and more wear the Energy Star label.
