Whether you’re calling a plumber for a renovation, ongoing issue, maintenance or a plumbing emergency, hiring a qualified plumbing contractor is vital to the integrity of the work. Here are five tips for you to consider to help you choose the best person for the job.
Check References
Begin by asking friends, co-workers and neighbors if they have anyone they can recommend. Once you have several to choose from, ask each for references. Any reputable, qualified plumbing contractor should be willing and able to provide you at least three current, local references. Call each one with a list of prepared questions covering topics, such as promptness, attitude, quality of work and whether they would hire the same contractor again.
Licensing and Insurance
In the Province of Alberta, plumbers are required to hold a Certificate of Qualification, or be officially registered as an apprentice. In addition to licensure, you should verify that they’re properly insured and bonded to protect all parties in the event of an accident or injury. Additionally, ask about any significant awards or accreditation.
Pricing
Obtain three written, detailed estimates for your job, but be wary of any that are substantially lower than others. While you may be tempted to save money, the lower cost could be due to inferior parts, lack of knowledge, or an attempt to cut corners.
Years of Experience
Ask your contractor how long they’ve been in business. A great number of years means more experience, and often signals a proven track record of excellence in their field.
Warranty
Every contractor should stand behind their work, including their parts and labor. Be sure to ask for a detailed copy of the warranty to see what’s covered and for how long. If a contractor refuses to offer a guarantee, move on.
