Top Factors Affecting Home Comfort

Top Factors Affecting Home ComfortWhen you consider the factors that affect home comfort, temperature will probably come to mind first. There are other key elements that influence the comfort level in a home, though, such as humidity and indoor air quality. To create a comfortable living environment, you need to achieve a balance of all these factors.

Temperature

Indoor temperature is directly related to the current weather conditions and thermometer reading, which makes heating and cooling equipment necessary. Various factors make maintaining a comfortable temperature a constant struggle. Sunlight streaming through the windows contributes to heat gain and raises the interior temperature. Air leaks through the envelope cause heat loss and lower the temperature. Even body heat has an impact.

Humidity

The amount of water vapour in the air, or humidity, also affects comfort in your home. The relatively dry climate in Calgary makes it easier to stay comfortable during the summer months, since perspiration can evaporate easily to cool down the body. During heating season, low humidity makes it more difficult to stay comfortable, as dry air doesn’t hold moisture well.

Air Quality

When the air circulating through a home is polluted with pollen, pet dander, dust, mold, bacterial and viral contaminants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemical vapours, the resulting health effects can make life uncomfortable. Impurities in the air can irritate the nasal passages and eyes, cause allergic reactions and worsen asthma and other respiratory problems. Backdrafting combustion devices can pump lethal carbon monoxide into the air can cause flu-like symptoms at low levels or become life-threatening at high levels.

Control

Controlling temperature, humidity and air quality is crucial to keep your home comfortable and safe year round. Properly sized HVAC equipment is a necessity, as is a programmable thermostat to regulate temperature efficiently. A whole-house humidifier can make heating more energy efficient and boost comfort.

There are different whole-house air cleaner options available to improve indoor air quality, while fuel-burning equipment maintenance and adequate ventilation are vital to reduce the risk of CO exposure.
