Deciding Whether to Repair or Replace Your HVAC System

Deciding Whether to Repair or Replace Your HVAC SystemIf you’ve been struggling to keep your furnace or air conditioner working through another season, you are probably also wondering whether it’s worth it to fix the equipment again or if it’s time to replace it. Consider the following factors when you’re making the decision to repair or replace your HVAC system.

  • System age: The age of your HVAC system should be the first and most basic factor in your repair or replace decision. Heating and cooling equipment is designed to provide many years of reliable service – 15 to 20 years is a common lifespan. If your HVAC system is reaching the higher limits of this expected service life, it may be time to replace it. However, don’t decide on age alone. If the system is still working properly, has received regular preventive maintenance and is in good condition, there’s probably no need to replace it.
  • System performance: Your heating and cooling systems should work when you need them. If your HVAC equipment has been breaking down frequently, you may need a replacement. Generally, when repair costs amount to half the cost of a new system, it’s time for replacement. If your HVAC equipment has been producing inconsistent heating or cooling, making unusual noises, or has been generally unreliable, it likely needs to be replaced.
  • System efficiency: Any unexpected increases in your heating or cooling bills not associated with outdoor temperature extremes could indicate that your HVAC system is losing efficiency. As the efficiency level decreases, the more it will cost to keep your indoor environment comfortable. In the long run, it may be more cost-effective to replace this type of HVAC system with a newer, more efficient and economical model.
