While many people know how important an air filter is in maintaining the efficiency of an HVAC system, very few pay attention to the type of filter they buy for their system. Performance differs from one filter type to another, so it’s important to learn more about them before making your next purchase. Let’s compare disposable and washable air filters.
Disposable Air Filters
These filters have higher MERV (Minimum Efficiency Rating Value) ratings than their washable counterparts. This means they are more effective in removing small particles from your household air.
Disposable filters require less time and effort to maintain. You simply remove the old filter and replace it with a new one. You’ll need to buy a new filter at least once every three months.
Washable Air Filters
These filters eliminate the hassle of having to change your air filter constantly. You can use them for a couple of years provided you clean and maintain them regularly. They are also more environmentally friendly than disposable filters.
While they cost more upfront than disposable air filters, they can save you more in the long run. A washable air filter can last up to five years before needing replacement. In the same period, you’ll have purchased many disposable filters.
One major disadvantage of washable filters is they are less effective at filtering small particles like pet dander and cigarette smoke. So it’s better to go for disposable filters if you smoke indoors or live with pets that shed more frequently.
After cleaning washable filters, you’ll have to ensure they dry completely before placing them back in your unit. A damp washable filter is an open invitation to mold and bacteria.
As you can see, both types of filters have their advantages and drawbacks you should consider before making your final decision. Either way, your heating and cooling system will work well as long as you give the filters proper care and attention.
