Top HVAC Tools

An HVAC technician uses an array of tools to perform maintenance and repairs or install new equipment. Many tools are also used by other trades, such as a reciprocating saw, tube cutter, ladder, wire stripper and level, and various types of pliers, snips, screwdrivers and wrenches. Other more specialized HVAC tools are used too, depending on the specific work being performed. Some of the top tools of the HVAC trade include:

Manifold Gauges

Also called refrigeration gauges, these are used to measure refrigerant pressure and temperature when a new cooling system is installed and charged, or when refrigerant is added to an existing HVAC system.

Vacuum Pump

A technician used this type of pump to draw any moisture, air and other contaminants out of a cooling system’s refrigerant lines to get it prepared for recharging.

Refrigerant Scales

This kind of scale is a vital tool for measuring how much refrigerant has been recovered from or added to a cooling system.

Manometer

A manometer is an essential device for measuring static pressure in the supply and return portions of your HVAC ductwork. These two measurements can reveal problems with the blower fan or with the duct system, such as leaks or obstructions, that are affecting airflow balance in the HVAC system.

Psychrometer

To measure humidity, your technician will use a wet and dry bulb psychrometer. The bulbs are used to take two temperature readings, and a technician can tell how well your cooling system is removing airborne moisture based on the difference between the temperatures.

Clamp Meter

This tool is used for measuring volts and amps on an HVAC system’s wiring, so your technician can troubleshoot and find the source of electrical problems.

Combustion Analyzer

This device allows your technician to assess the performance and efficiency of your gas furnace. A combustion analyzer is used to measure the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air, as well as the temperature of the smoke exiting the flue.
