When vacation time rolls around, most of us are in a quandary about what to do about our homes. Pets, plants, mail, deliveries and home systems may all require some attention. That means you’re likely either to ask someone you know to come in and take care of things when you’re gone, or you’re going to hire a house sitter — either to stay at your home or check on your home daily while you’re gone.
It can be hard to think of everything you need to tell the sitter, but start making a list asap so you can go over it with the sitter before you depart. Lists will differ, but here are some ideas for a sitter checklist to get you started.
Summer Sitter Checklist
1. Make your home looks occupied. Have the sitter bring in the mail, newspapers, circulars and any packages that are delivered while you’re away. Set the TV or some lights in the home on a timer so they come on every evening. Explain how the timers work so the sitter can reset them if need be.
2. Plan for watering indoor and outdoor plants. Write out instructions for indoor and outdoor watering. It’s always best to water outdoor plants and grass with a timed irrigation system.
3. Set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature, and leave the system on while you’re away so your home doesn’t get too hot. Have the sitter check the temperature to make sure it’s being maintained throughout the home.
If something goes wrong with your HVAC system, such as strange noises, uncomfortable temperature or stopped-up condensate drain, let your sitter know who should be called to repair it — particularly if you are going to be out of reach. Notify your HVAC company in advance that you’ve authorized the sitter to meet with the HVAC consultant if a repair is needed.
4. Find a friend or relative willing to serve as backup should your sitter not be available for some reason.
