Thermostat Maintenance: When to Change Your Batteries

When to Change the Batteries on Your ThermostatAs we move from one season to the next and continue to rely on a properly operational HVAC system, the importance of having a working thermotstat cannot be understated. Thermostat maintenance typically includes swapping out the batteries. But, do you how to recognize the telltale signs that they need to be replaced?

The Ease of Modern Thermostats

Manual units have fallen out of favor, having been replaced by more advanced thermostats that can do everything from being controlled through a wi-fi connection to providing weather updates for your area. Most of these devices still run on batteries, of course, so you’ll need to switch them out every once in a while.

How to Know When Batteries Are Running Low

The good news is that it’s easier than ever to know when batteries are running low on power and need to be changed. These newer thermostat models typically come equipped with a “low battery” warning light or will emit a light beeping sound. When the light comes on or the device starts making noise, it’s time to replace the batteries.

When to Change the Batteries Without a Warning

There are times when you should change the batteries of your thermostat even if there hasn’t been a low battery warning. First, you should replace them at the beginning of each new season to avoid any malfunctions when you need proper heating or cooling most. Second, if you’re going away on business or on vacation, you should change them before you leave to prevent any problems while you’re gone.

How to Replace the Batteries

Replacing a thermostat’s batteries is a very simple chore. All you need to do is open up the battery casing, take the old batteries out, and put the new ones in. Even the most advanced units haven’t made this more complicated even though the batteries provide power to several functionalities.
