Celebrating Clean Air Day

Spring weather is on its way in our region, and by next month we should be enjoying more of it, with fresh breezes and sweet-smelling air. At least we hope wherever you are, the air is clean and smells good. If not, maybe it’s time to think about how you can help make it better by boosting air quality awareness. And there’s no better time to focus on improving air quality, indoors and out, than Clean Air Day, taking place this year on June 5 during Canada Environment Week.

Organizers of Clean Air Day not only target poor air quality on this day, but also climate change, which is being driven by the buildup of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

Among the things environmental organizers and governments encourage on this day:

  • Use mass transit whenever possible.
  • Bike or walk instead of driving cars.
  • Don’t idle your vehicle needlessly.
  • Plant trees to help absorb carbon emissions.
  • Limit or stop burning wood, which not only pollutes the home’s air but also contributes to carbon emissions.

Inside Your Home

It’s also a good idea to focus on the air quality of your home on this day. Many indoor changes will have a positive effect on outdoor air and the environment in general. For instance, replacing inefficient HVAC equipment with the latest, most efficient systems will not only lower your energy use and reduce your bill, but will also help you reduce your carbon footprint.

Improving the air quality in your home will also reduce allergic reactions, asthma attacks and respiratory infections. You can improve indoor air quality by doing the following:

  • Change the air filter in your HVAC system often. Use a good quality, pleated air filter that will trap airborne particulates.
  • Reduce use of products that give off volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as pressed wood, cleaning products (go natural with vinegar), paints (use water-based), solvents and dry-cleaned clothing (air it out before you bring it indoors).
