Now that the weather is warming up all over the country, many of you are probably planning to hit the road or take to the skies on vacation. Before you head out, though, here are some HVAC vacation tips that you should utilize to help you save energy and utility costs while you’re gone.
Schedule an HVAC Tune-Up
To keep your HVAC system running efficiently throughout the season, you should schedule an annual tune-up with a qualified technician. If you haven’t already done so now that the weather has warmed up, prior to vacation is the perfect time to get this done.
Program Your Thermostat
You’d be surprised how many homeowners neglect to optimize their programmable thermostat to help keep costs under control. Using a thermostat to maintain a specific temperature while you’re out of town is the perfect way to control your energy costs without things getting too uncomfortable for pets, plants, etc.
Crank Up the Temperature
When you’re out of town, you probably don’t want your temperature to skyrocket, but there’s also no reason to keep it too low, either. A typical safe point is between 80 and 85 degrees, which will keep the interior comfortable while saving you on electricity bills.
Shut Your Blinds
It should be obvious that the less heat that gets inside your home, the less your air conditioner will run while you’re gone. So, before heading off on vacation, make sure that all of your blinds are closed. This will keep out the heat from the sun, which will help save both energy and money.
Have Someone Check In
Having someone you trust check in on your home while you’re out of town is always a good idea, even if you don’t have pets to feed or plants to water. Leave your important numbers for them to contact in case of an emergency, including your HVAC contractor, plumber, and electrician.
