Five Energy Saving Tips For Homeowners

In order to maximize energy savings in your home, we recommend using these five energy saving tips. The investment in time and materials that go toward improved energy efficiency will help pay for itself in lower energy bills for years to come.

When we recommend different ways that homeowners can improve their home’s efficiency, one of the first things we suggest is to check the seals on the windows and doors. If the interior or exterior caulk around windows and doors is cracked or peeling then replace it. One trick you can use is to place a lit candle in front of windows and doors to see if a draft is coming through. If the flame flickers then you either need to replace the caulk, or you need to replace the window or door.

Your duct system that carries your heated and cooled air is supposed to be an enclosed system. Use approved HVAC sealing tape to seal the seams that hold your ductwork together. This prevents valuable heated or cooled air from escaping, and it also creates energy savings by reducing the amount of energy your furnace or air conditioner uses to push the air into your home.

A quick inspection that homeowners can do to see if their home is energy efficient is taking a look at their insulation. You should have insulation in your attic and in the ceiling of your basement. If you have insulation in place, then check to see if you have the right kind by checking the R-rating. The R-rating is a number printed on the insulation that indicates how well the insulation prevents the movement of air. An R-rating of around 40 is preferred in most cases.

Have a programmable thermostat installed to increase your home’s energy savings potential. A programmable thermostat allows you to lower the temperature of your home at night, or when you go away on vacation, to help save on energy.

Finally, we recommend having a certified technician maintain your heating and cooling systems at least twice a year to help keep them running properly and at maximum efficiency.
