New Season, New Air Filters. And Keep Those Filters Changed

Filters were created for a very specific purpose: They help the A/C system run efficiently by preventing dirt buildup. Filters impact indoor air quality, trapping particles in the air. To keep your system running well and your air clean, it’s necessary to use the right filter and keep those filters clean by regularly changing them.

There are quite a few different types of air filters on the market. The manufacturer of your A/C should outline the recommended filter to use; however, it’s possible to upgrade a filter to a higher quality one. For example, if you’re using a basic, disposable filter, you might find that you get better air quality by upgrading to a pleated one. There are also HEPA filters, electrostatic filters and activated carbon filters. Most air filters are effective at targeting a specific category of pollutants, like particles, chemicals or microorganisms.

To get off to a good start, insert a new air filter in the A/C system before the new summer season begins. Regular filter changes should also be part of your summer maintenance schedule. Manufacturers generally recommend how often to change the filter. You can follow this list as a general guideline:

Change an air filter monthly, if:

  • you want the best indoor air quality
  • you own pets with fur
  • you live in a dusty area
  • you live in a region where A/C is used regularly, over several months, and consistently, all day long
  • smokers live in the home
  • you open doors and windows a lot for fresh air

Otherwise, changing filters every other month or every third month is suitable.

To get the most out of your air filters, remember to change them at the beginning of a new season, and change them regularly throughout the A/C season. Arpi’s Industries LTD. is more than happy to answer your questions about air filters or any other HVAC concerns you may have.
