Manage Home Equipment This Winter By Prepping With These Energy Savers

While homeowners get out and enjoy the last vestiges of warm weather, this season is the best time to prep your home to endure Calgary’s harsh, cold winter. There are a variety of ways to get your home ready, with varying degrees of cost and difficulty:

  • Seal air leaks. If you’ve never carefully inspected your home for air leaks, or even if you’ve sealed leaks in the past, your home’s structure can shift over time and create new leaks. Sealing leaks is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy losses. Using caulk for smaller leaks and spray foam for larger ones, check and seal leaks around windows, door frames and electrical outlets.
  • Prepare your fireplace. If you have a fireplace, you should have it cleaned before the season starts. Be sure to have the flue inspected as well to avoid any safety hazards.
  • Avoid pipe freeze. When temperatures dip well below freezing, your pipes are at risk. Before winter sets in, be sure to drain and store any outdoor hoses, and if you have A/C pipes outside the home, insulate them.
  • Prepare your furnace. If you haven’t yet scheduled preventive maintenance, just call Arpi’s Industries. Having the furnace inspected and cleaned is essential to reliable operation and efficient energy use.
  • Check detectors. With consistent furnace use, you’ll want to be sure your carbon monoxide detectors are ready for action. You should have one on every floor of your home, and one near the central sleeping areas.
  • Inspect insulation. Insulating your home goes a long way toward avoiding energy loss. Insulation acts as a heat barrier, preventing valuable heat from escaping from your home. Attic insulation is of primary concern, as this is one common place that heat tends to get lost.

Conducting several of these projects will help you reap energy savings over the long winter haul. Make sure your home is prepared, and make your comfort a priority this year.
