Are you noticing lately that your home is increasingly dusty? You can control dust in your home by following some fairly simple steps and cleaning regimens — whether that dust is a result of your R-2000 home, or the after-effect of improving an older home’s air leaks and insulation.
The problem with dust is two-fold:
- First, as humans, we shed a lot of skin on a daily basis that contributes to dust accumulation.
- Second, a great majority of the materials in your home attract dust, like carpeting, furniture, bedding and clothes.
So, you won’t be able to create a completely dust-free home, but you can take some steps to ensure that you have maximum control over dust in your home.
Here’s what you can do:
- Clean closets well – These locations attract dust, as we generally keep towels, clothes and bedding stored on their shelves. To reduce dust in these areas, store lesser-used items in closed plastic bins or bags. You should also store clothing items in the same way. This will also make shelves easier to clean.
- Use a stronger furnace filter — If your current filter is the same type that came with the original system, upgrading to a filter with a higher-minimum efficiency rating value (MERV) can help to trap more dust. Contact your HVAC contractor for help selecting the appropriate filter for your system.
- Wash bedding often – Sheets and bedspreads are a common place for dust to accumulate, so washing these items often will reduce dust buildup.
- Clean with the right tools – Old-fashioned feather dusters and the like just move dust around. A damp cloth or electrostatic cloth will trap dust.
- Use the right flooring – Dust loves to hide in fibrous carpet materials. If you have rugs, shake them outside often, or consider installing wood or linoleum flooring.
- Install an air cleaner – The right choice in systems will help to trap more dust, but not all systems target dust, so get expert help.
