Energy efficiency is a key factor in the purchase of new or replacement HVAC equipment. A new air conditioner or furnace can be a significant investment, but a model with high efficiency can allow you to recoup the cost of the equipment through the savings it provides on monthly energy bills. In Canada, a reliable way to identify high-efficiency HVAC equipment is through the Energy Star label. Energy Star certification assures buyers that equipment has been officially tested and certified to be energy efficient.
Energy Star in Canada is a voluntary cooperative program between the Canadian government and manufacturers, sellers and promoters in the HVAC industry. The program is administered by the Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). This program allows makers of HVAC equipment to have their products officially tested and evaluated for energy efficiency. Qualified equipment and devices will meet or exceed minimum Canadian federal energy-efficiency standards. Most Energy Star-certified equipment in the United States will also qualify for the label in Canada.
You can find Energy Star-qualified products such as:
- Large appliances, including refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, freezers and clothes dryers
- Heating, cooling and ventilation equipment, such as furnaces and air conditioners
- Office equipment, including photocopiers, printers, computer monitors and fax machines
- Commercial equipment
- Consumer electronics, such as computers, televisions and audio and video equipment
- Windows and doors
- Lighting, including light fixtures and light bulbs
Check for the Energy Star symbol on the product’s EnerGuide label. The label will contain other information about the products’ energy consumption, but an Energy Star certification ensures high levels of energy efficiency without any loss of performance or capacity.
Energy Star-certified products save homeowners significant amounts of money on monthly energy bills. In some cases, the equipment can be paid for with these savings by about the halfway point of the equipment’s expected lifespan.
