In Western Canada, the only thing worse than knowing that summer is on it’s way out is knowing that fall is on it’s way in. This is because the beginning of fall signals yet another allergy season.
For individuals allergic to ragweed, pollen is more than a nuisance. It is a health threat. Those who regularly inhale, and in some cases, ingest these tiny particles may find themselves in respiratory distress, and a constant state of discomfort. With all the beautiful foliage up here, who has time to contend with red puffy eyes, raw noses, and a three-month long dry cough?
Dusting isn’t enough. There are particles that float undetected in the air that you breathe.
To keep fall allergies from ruining your life, make sure they don’t take over, and one of the best ways to do that is by using good quality air filters in your HVAC system. As the air in your home is drawn into the HVAC system, it is filtered free of foreign particles like dust and pollen. Be sure to pay particular attention to the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) of your filter, as this determines the size of particle it will intercept. High quality, pleated filters offer added protection from many types of home pollutants.
Another way to keep fall allergies under control is with an air purification system. One type of air cleaning technology uses ultraviolet lights, targeting mold, mildew and other pollutants in the evaporator coil and in the return ducts. Other types of air cleaners or purifiers use electrostatic charges to trap particles.
Mold thrives in warm, moist environments, and many people have their heat turned up in the fall, while some use humidifiers to ease the symptoms of colds. Beware, however: a combination of warmth and moisture provides conditions conducive to mold and mildew. Dust mites are also drawn to moisture.
