Deciding whether or not to use a tankless water heater for your home is an important decision to make if you are building a new house, but you should also think about one if your old water heater is starting to rust out, or outlive its useful lifespan.
Generally, small families and new homes are best served with a tankless water heater since they can be installed while the house is being built, and they are usually much more efficient than tank heaters. The fewer people there are in the house, the more likely it is that a tankless heater can satisfy everyone’s needs at once. Even for large families though, a tankless water heater may still be an attractive choice since they are relatively small, making it possible to install more than one. Having one dedicated to a washer and a kitchen sink can let you run those without depriving someone else in the house of hot water in their shower during our cold Calgary winters.
A water heater that stores hot water is usually best for large families who are going to have a high hot water draw at certain times of the day. Even multiple tankless water heaters may not be able to keep up with several showers and the laundry going in a large house in the early morning. Storage heaters also cost quite a bit less than a tankless heater, making it a more attractive option if you are looking to save money now, at the expense of some heat loss.
